MoEI and EtihadWE Launch Initiative to Drive Renewable Energy in Northern Emirates
Hyphen Web Desk
The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) and Etihad Water and Electricity (EtihadWE) have joined forces to promote the use of renewable energy in the Northern Emirates. This collaboration focuses on expanding sustainable energy resources and reducing carbon emissions as part of the UAE's wider goals to meet its ambitious climate targets. The initiative will involve the deployment of solar panels across various public and private sectors, with a particular emphasis on enhancing energy efficiency and transitioning to cleaner energy sources.
EtihadWE's contribution to the initiative centers around providing advanced infrastructure to support renewable energy projects. The company has been investing heavily in solar energy solutions and smart grid technology. These efforts are aimed at increasing the share of renewable energy in the national grid, particularly in the regions of Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain, and Ajman.
As part of the initiative, EtihadWE has also introduced plans to upgrade power distribution networks, ensuring that the new solar installations are efficiently integrated into the national energy system. In collaboration with MoEI, the initiative will also focus on educating the public about the importance of renewable energy and encouraging the adoption of solar technology in homes, businesses, and government buildings.
The broader context of this effort aligns with the UAE's Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to diversify the country's energy mix. By 2050, the UAE is targeting a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and an increase in the use of renewable energy to 50% of the total energy production. The Northern Emirates are seen as a critical area for this transformation due to their growing energy demands and available land for solar farms.
The MoEI has emphasized that this partnership will not only contribute to the sustainability goals but also drive economic growth through the development of a green energy sector. The initiative is expected to create new jobs and attract investment into the region, bolstering the local economy while ensuring that the UAE continues to lead in the global energy transition.
In addition to the rollout of solar panels, the initiative will include energy storage solutions and the development of microgrids that can operate independently or as part of the larger national grid. This is designed to enhance the resilience of the energy system in the Northern Emirates, ensuring a reliable power supply even during peak demand periods or in the event of disruptions.
