The concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in Earth's atmosphere has reached an alarming new high, according to data collected by scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Measurements taken in May 2024 revealed a seasonal peak of nearly 427 parts per million (ppm), which translates to a 3 parts per million increase compared to May 2023. This marks one of the largest annual jumps ever recorded.

The relentless rise in CO2 concentration is primarily attributed to human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas.
