Masdar, TotalEnergies, and EPointZero Forge Alliance to Expand Clean Energy in Africa and Asia
Hyphen Web Desk

The partnership focuses on deploying secure and sustainable electricity to local neighborhoods in Africa, with plans to initiate new clean energy projects in Southeast Asia. Additionally, TotalEnergies and EPointZero will explore potential collaborations in solar, wind, and energy storage solutions within India. This initiative underscores a commitment to decarbonizing energy systems and promoting environmental sustainability in regions where energy access remains a critical challenge.
Masdar, headquartered in Abu Dhabi, has been at the forefront of renewable energy projects globally, positioning the United Arab Emirates as a leader in the energy transition. TotalEnergies, a French integrated energy company, brings extensive experience in energy production and distribution, while EPointZero contributes specialized knowledge in clean energy technologies. The collaboration aims to combine these strengths to implement projects that are both impactful and scalable.
This agreement builds upon previous efforts by these companies to advance renewable energy initiatives. Notably, Masdar and TotalEnergies have previously collaborated on projects aimed at developing green hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel, highlighting a shared vision for innovative energy solutions. The inclusion of EPointZero in this new framework signifies an expansion of collaborative efforts to encompass a broader range of clean energy technologies and target regions.
The strategic importance of this partnership is underscored by the pressing need for reliable and clean energy in developing regions. Access to sustainable energy is a pivotal factor in economic development, health, and education. By focusing on Africa and Asia, the collaboration addresses areas with significant energy access challenges, aiming to provide solutions that are both environmentally friendly and economically viable.
In addition to this partnership, TotalEnergies has demonstrated a commitment to enhancing energy access through substantial investments. In November 2024, TotalEnergies, along with BP, Equinor, and Shell, pledged $500 million to increase access to affordable energy in sub-Saharan Africa, South, and Southeast Asia. This investment is directed towards projects that include domestic solar energy systems, micro-electricity grids, and modern cooking fuels, aiming to address the energy needs of over 2.3 billion people who rely on traditional stoves.
Masdar has also been proactive in advancing renewable energy infrastructure. In January 2025, the company launched a groundbreaking facility designed to produce 1 gigawatt of uninterrupted clean power in Abu Dhabi. This $6 billion project is expected to become operational by 2027 and represents a significant step in transforming renewable energy into a reliable baseload power source. Such initiatives reflect Masdar's commitment to pioneering large-scale renewable energy solutions that can be replicated in other regions.
The collaboration with EPointZero introduces additional expertise in clean energy technologies, potentially accelerating the deployment of innovative solutions tailored to the specific needs of communities in Africa and Asia. By exploring opportunities in solar, wind, and energy storage, the partnership aims to develop integrated energy systems that enhance reliability and sustainability.
This framework agreement aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable development. By focusing on regions that are disproportionately affected by energy poverty, the partnership not only addresses environmental concerns but also contributes to social and economic development. Access to clean energy is a catalyst for improving quality of life, enabling access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
The success of this initiative will depend on effective collaboration between the partners and engagement with local stakeholders. Implementing projects in diverse regions requires a nuanced understanding of local contexts, regulatory environments, and community needs. By leveraging their combined expertise and resources, Masdar, TotalEnergies, and EPointZero are well-positioned to navigate these complexities and deliver impactful clean energy solutions.
