Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) has announced its plans to develop a new solar power project with a capacity of 500 megawatts (MW), further reinforcing its commitment to sustainable energy. This venture aligns with Qatar’s broader push toward diversifying energy sources and reducing its carbon footprint as part of the national vision to achieve sustainability.

With the global energy market pivoting toward renewable sources, QEWC’s announcement marks a significant step in meeting both domestic energy needs and supporting international climate goals. The project’s specifics regarding location, financing, and timeline are expected to be outlined in the coming months. Industry experts anticipate that the new plant will follow the success of the Siraj 1 solar plant, one of the region’s largest, which QEWC commissioned in partnership with QatarEnergy in 2022.

This 500 MW initiative is just one of several projects in QEWC’s pipeline. The company has been expanding its renewable energy portfolio, alongside traditional gas and water desalination operations, to ensure a steady and resilient energy supply. Its recent focus has been on large-scale solar initiatives, including collaborations through Nebras Power, its international investment arm. Nebras has been actively participating in renewable energy ventures across the globe, including projects in Brazil, Jordan, and Australia.

In Qatar, QEWC has also been ramping up efforts to improve water desalination capacity, as evidenced by ongoing projects like the Ras Abu Fontas station. This dual focus on energy and water security reflects the company’s strategic approach to address the challenges of the region’s arid climate and growing population. Furthermore, QEWC is keen on integrating more eco-friendly technology into its energy mix, aiming to reduce the country's dependency on hydrocarbons while maintaining its position as a leading energy producer.
