UAE bolsters Ghana’s climate and biodiversity goals with $30m commitment

Hyphen Web Desk
The UAE has entered into a strategic $30 million agreement with Ghana, marking a significant partnership aimed at supporting biodiversity and climate initiatives. The collaborative framework focuses on climate resilience and environmental preservation, with a particular emphasis on community engagement, gender equality, and youth inclusion. This initiative forms a part of Ghana’s Resilient Ghana strategy, which addresses climate change challenges through nature-based solutions.

Key figures such as Dr. Amna Bint Abdullah Al Shamsi, UAE’s Minister of Climate Change and the Environment, and Samuel Jinapor, Ghana’s Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, have been instrumental in bringing the two nations together to launch this ambitious plan. The partnership aligns with the broader UAE Consensus, a commitment to halt and reverse deforestation by 2030, further exemplified by the nation’s active role in the Forest and Climate Leaders Partnership. This public-private collaboration seeks to strengthen global efforts in combating environmental degradation.

The financial backing from the UAE will primarily target six areas: biodiversity corridors, agroecology, reforestation, and initiatives that not only protect ecosystems but also foster socio-economic development. This includes a gender-responsive approach, ensuring equitable participation and benefits, particularly for women and the youth. Ghana’s REDD+ process, a pioneering effort in forest protection, will be a key part of this initiative, with stringent metrics in place to track progress and outcomes.
