Henkel Powers Up Sustainability in Middle East and Africa
Henkel Adhesive Technologies, a global leader in adhesives, sealants and functional coatings, announced a significant milestone in its journey towards environmental sustainability. All its manufacturing sites in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region have now transitioned to 100% renewable electricity. This achievement eliminates carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from electricity usage, also known as Scope 2 emissions, for these facilities.
The shift to renewable energy sources across Henkel's eight MEA manufacturing sites, located in six countries, represents a substantial commitment to environmental responsibility. The company has implemented a diverse mix of renewable energy sources across the region, including solar power in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, wind energy in South Africa, and hydropower in Turkey and Kenya.
This transition is projected to eliminate approximately 10, 471 tons of CO2 emissions annually from Henkel's MEA operations. This reduction is equivalent to removing the carbon footprint of roughly 2, 500 gasoline-powered cars driven for one year or approximately 2, 700 flights from New York to Singapore.
"By achieving 100% renewable electricity usage in the MEA region, Henkel Adhesive Technologies is setting a strong precedent for sustainable manufacturing practices, " said a company spokesperson. "This accomplishment reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship and aligns with our global 2030+ Sustainability Ambition Framework. "
The framework establishes three long-term goals for Henkel:supporting the regeneration of the planet, fostering thriving communities, and being a reliable partner. The company's efforts in the MEA region are a significant step towards achieving these goals.
Henkel's initiative is not only beneficial for the environment but also strengthens the company's position as a leader in sustainable business practices. By embracing renewable energy, Henkel reduces its reliance on fossil fuels, mitigating the impact of fluctuating energy prices and potential supply disruptions.
The company's commitment to sustainability extends beyond its own operations. Henkel is actively collaborating with suppliers and partners to promote environmentally responsible practices throughout its supply chain.
Henkel's achievement in the MEA region serves as a powerful example for other multinational corporations operating in the area. As the world collectively strives for a more sustainable future, Henkel's leadership in adopting renewable energy solutions paves the way for positive environmental change.
