Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power, a global leader in renewable energy and water desalination, has signed a momentous agreement with the Tunisian government to embark on a groundbreaking green hydrogen project. This collaboration signifies a significant step towards both nations' clean energy goals and Europe's ambition to diversify its energy supplies.

The project, envisioned in a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), outlines the development of a large-scale green hydrogen production facility in Tunisia. With a projected capacity of up to 600, 000 tons of green hydrogen annually, the project will be rolled out in three phases. This green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy sources like solar and wind power to split water molecules, is slated for export to the European Union (EU) via the "South 2" hydrogen pipeline. This pipeline, identified as a project of common interest by the EU, connects Tunisia to key European markets like Italy, Austria, and Germany.

The MoU signing ceremony, held in Tunis, Tunisia, was attended by prominent figures from both sides. Marco Arcelli, CEO of ACWA Power, emphasized the project's potential to be a game-changer. "We are thrilled to collaborate with the Tunisian government on this pioneering project, " he declared. "By bringing our expertise in renewables, desalination, and green hydrogen to the table, we aim to establish a bridge connecting Tunisia with Europe, facilitating their decarbonization objectives. "

Fatma Thabet Chiboub, Tunisia's Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy, echoed Arcelli's sentiments. "This partnership with ACWA Power represents a significant milestone in our nation's green hydrogen strategy, " she stated. "The project holds immense potential not only to bolster our clean energy production but also to create sizable economic opportunities and solidify Tunisia's position as a frontrunner in the green hydrogen sector. "

The project aligns perfectly with ACWA Power's unwavering commitment to spearheading the global green hydrogen revolution. The company is already spearheading the construction of NEOM Green Hydrogen Project, a joint venture with NEOM and Air Products, which upon completion will be the world's first at-scale green hydrogen facility. Additionally, ACWA Power is actively involved in developing another green hydrogen project in Uzbekistan.

Analysts believe this Tunisia-ACWA Power collaboration presents a win-win scenario for all parties involved. Tunisia stands to gain significant economic benefits through project development, job creation, and establishing itself as a key green hydrogen exporter. The EU will have access to a reliable source of clean energy, aiding its efforts to transition away from fossil fuels. ACWA Power, on the other hand, will further solidify its position as a global leader in the burgeoning green hydrogen market.

The project is still in its initial stages, with feasibility studies and groundwork yet to be completed. However, the signing of the MoU signifies a strong commitment from both Tunisia and ACWA Power to bring this ambitious project to fruition. With its potential to reshape the energy landscape of North Africa and Europe, this green hydrogen project is certainly one to watch.
